New Vaquero Horse Painting

I recently started painting in a new style of gouache pronounced (gwash) which is an opaque watercolor.  The pigments are a bit coarser so it has more covering power.

What I love about it is that you can create a painting that has more 'body' than a regular watercolor but yet you can still create transparent washes also.  Depending on the paper, it can really make the image 'pop' or look three dimensional.

This painting is one of a ranch horse, buckskin.  I liked the look in his eye, where he was alert yet relaxed at the same time.  The size is 11 x 14 and was painted on 300lb arches cold press.

Rodeo Sketch #1

I painted and drew this quickly to step away from the 'formal' have to be perfect painting.  It was done free hand and without grids, etc.  I loved the process and the final work and look forward to doing more.

New Original Watercolor Mustang In New Mexico

I painted this the other day, has been on my 'ta do' list forever.  So even though it's summer, I painted a scene from winter.  There were more horses in this herd too who are on my list as well.  This is the first of a series.

Santa Anita Paddock Late Afternoon

This is an original painting, oil on canvas on board, 8 x 10 inches, of the horses being led into the paddock at Santa Anita Race Track.  The light was so gorgeous and is what led me to want to paint this at all.  Usually when I'm starting any painting I have a question in the back of my mind or a desire to see if I can 'paint' the idea into the physical.  In this case, I wanted to paint more in the impressionistic style in order to capture the light.

Zenyatta In Morning Training

After watching American Pharoah's incredible run in the Belmont, winning by five and half lengths and capturing the Triple Crown, racing was all I could think about for the rest of the evening and into this morning.  So, I had this painting of the great race mare Zenyatta on my 'to upload' list for this last week and decided to go ahead and list it today in commemoration of great horses, great race horses and the people who work with them in all capacities.  Am still thinking about that race yesterday and am reminded of when I saw Zenyatta run as well.  One of the best of the best.

Summer In Colorado

This was a ranch that I was driving by quickly but saw this barn out of the corner of my eye and then hit the brakes.  I got out and took notes and photos and put it on my 'ta do' list.  Am happy I finally pulled it out to paint.

Old Ranch Early Evening

This is a miniature watercolor of an old ranch on the central coast in California.  I kept my horse there for awhile, and this was a common scene after I finished feeding.  Quiet and peaceful.  This was a wonderful place.
